Gold rush

While the rest of us hibernate, these 11 American Olympians are braving the ice and snow in pursuit of a medal at the Sochi Games. They took a breather to talk to Hemispheres.

Ted Ligety, 29, Alpine Skiing

It’s a big honor, especially because there are so many legendary athletes that have won it before, so to be able to have your name alongside some of those guys is pretty neat.

You beat Ivica Kostelic for a gold medal in 2006. Do you have a person you’re hoping to beat this time around?
My main rival is Marcel Hirscher. We’ve been battling back and forth the last couple of years.
Who’s on top right now?
I won the first race of the year, so I guess I am, but he won the overall title in the giant slalom, which is the event I have the best chance of winning a gold medal in. We’re actually good friends. It would be easier if I hated him.
