The Winter of Our Content

With two new shows premiering this month, HBO is hoping you’ll get snowed in

In-home entertainment is about the only thing the frigid month of January has going for it, and with haute TV viewers newly freed from their “Breaking Bad” habit and the return of “Game of Thrones” still months away, HBO is on the prowl for a new hit.

To this end, on Jan. 12 the network debuts the eagerly anticipated “True Detective,” a police procedural with the miniseries feel of the U.K. hit “Sherlock” and the Deep South occultism of “True Blood.” The show stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as Louisiana State Police investigators looking into a bizarre murder, with as much steamy Southern drawling as humanly possible.

If the weather’s still awful the following weekend, tune in for the premiere of HBO’s “Looking,” the latest chapter in the evolution of big city dating dramas after “Sex and the City” and “Girls.” This time, the characters are gay men navigating the social scene in San Francisco, which, for the record, isn’t so bad this time of year.
