2013 Audi Allroad

The bells and whistles

AQU120001

Starting price: $39,600

Perks: It’s spectacularly difficult to get lost with Audi Connect’s mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and Google Earth navigation system, but if you do, you can use the voice search feature to search for information about weather or local destinations. Failing that, you can always sit back in the eight-way power seats, open the sunroof, listen to the 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen Sound System and wait for AAA.

Drivetrain: A 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine and fuel-efficient eight-speed Tiptronic transmission provide 211 horsepower and 258 lb-feet of torque. The resulting rough-and-tumble crossover can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.

Performance: With 7.1 inches of ground clearance, the Allroad can swoop 1.5 inches closer to rocks than its cousin the A4 Avant. It’s also half an inch wider, which provides for more stability. Quattro all-wheel drive, 18-inch wheels (with the option of 19-inchers) and adaptive cruise control that maintains an even distance from the car ahead make for an incredibly calm ride.
