DESIGN NOTES: Rising like a shimmering Cubist sculpture of steel, glass and granite, this St. Regis is a very different beast from its statelier New York cousin, but no less impressive. The interior cleverly combines notes of traditional Thai luxury with the trappings of a chic, modern city hotel.
ROOM WITH A VIEW: Book one of the luxurious suites, and your gaze is bound to be drawn by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lush Royal Bangkok Sports Club. The corner suites on floors 16 through 22 boast particularly good views of the glittering city skyline.
BEST PLACE TO HANG OUT: Located on a 15th-floor terrace, the hotel pool offers a welcome respite from Bangkok’s legendary street-level craziness. Designed with the feel of a traditional Oriental garden, it’s perfect for a serene early-morning swim.
SIGNATURE COCKTAIL: Every St. Regis boasts its own version of a Bloody Mary, a nod to the legend that the cocktail was invented at the chain’s New York outpost. The Siam Mary here comes infused with a jet lag–busting mix of Thai chili and Thai basil, lemongrass, wasabi, coriander and lime.
UNEXPECTED TREAT: Hotel reps meet you as you disembark from the plane, whiz you through diplomatic channels at passport control and escort you to a waiting limo. Upon arriving at the hotel, you’ll be assigned a personal butler who will not only attend to your needs, but anticipate them—so don’t be surprised to return from dinner to find a blissfully steamy bath dotted with rose petals.
