The Month Ahead

What to see, read and listen to in October

Anyone interested in taking a close-up look at the patches on Travis Bickle’s madman military jacket or examining the heft of Margaret Thatcher’s shoulder pads should head to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum this month. “Hollywood Costume,” the V&A’s big fall show, amasses more than 100 of the film world’s most recognizable outfits, including those worn by Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver and Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady. While the exhibit does delve into the theoretical side of costume design (“the link between clothing and identity,” say), the real attraction is the clothing: Dorothy’s gingham dress, Jack Sparrow’s sweaty bandanna, Holly Golightly’s Givenchy frock, Darth Vader’s billowy cape and an outfit worn by Rose “Rose!” Bukater before the Titanic went down.
