Amazing Grace

These perfect examples of timeless elegance have stayed ahead of the pack by keeping one eye on tradition and the other on modern luxury

Royal digs and a bygone tradition of impeccable service

When the royal family comes to Tokyo, they stay at the Imperial (the Japanese Princess Sayako was married here in 2005). The luxurious tower is actually in its third iteration — fire and structural deterioration having destroyed the first two — but this one’s here to stay. Made of marble and brass, no expense was spared in its reconstruction, and the staff practices a type of singular service from old ryokan inns that has all but disappeared. www.imperialhotel.co.jp
