Jazz Age

Miles Davis had a rough life, but he made some great music. An exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts through August 29 titled “‘We Want Miles’: Miles Davis vs. Jazz” gives an exhaustive look at his trials and his influence on music through unseen concert footage, paintings by the trumpeter and portraits by Annie Leibovitz and Irving Penn, among others. www.mmfa.qc.ca

EMPIRE STATE OF MIND

New York is a fast-paced city. Slow down at the Andaz 5th Avenue, with its simple, cozy decor and room service that lets you customize dishes with seasonal ingredients. Opening this month, it’s in the 1916 Rogers Peet Building, in view of the Beaux-Arts New York Public Library. www.newyork.5thavenue.andaz.hyatt.com

ICH BIN EIN FRANKFURTER

Nestled beside the River Main in central Frankfurt, Villa Kennedy (named for JFK) is a neo-Gothic castle built in 1904 and refurbished in 2006. Today it houses nine private suites, a lush, garden-view restaurant called Gusto and a spa with “technogym” training facilities. JFK may have been a Berliner, but he loved Frankfurt, too. www.villakennedyhotel.de

TO DYE FOR

A round at the stunning Pete Dye–designed Pound Ridge Golf Club, in Pound Ridge, New York, is like a geography lesson of the Northeast. There are huge granite outcroppings, rolling meadows, sodden marshes and leafy hardwood groves. But with its blind doglegs and narrow approaches, this course—owned by Ken Wang, brother to fashion designer Vera—is not for the casual nature lover. It is equal parts reward and punishment. www.poundridgegolf.com

COMPOSE YOURSELF

Poland has a lot to be proud of— kielbasa, pierogies, Lech Walesa. And then there’s Frédéric Chopin, the great composer who was born just outside Warsaw. The town of Duszniki Zdrój has an annual celebration of the virtuoso, but this year will be extraspecial because it’s been two centuries since Chopin’s birth. www.chopin.festival.pl

ON THE FRINGE

This month at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, catch the plays, musicals, concerts and dance performances that will be the next big thing. Many performances give previews at nightly showcases, so festivalgoers can decide if they really want to purchase tickets. Those Hollywood folks could take a lesson. www.edfringe.com

TAKE THE PLUNGE

And travelers looking to make a splash can do so at W Fort Lauderdale, where a new “WET” pool allows the crowd at the Living Room to watch swimmers through portholes. www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels
