Masters at Work
At this California art institute, the artist is the exhibit.
The new modern-art exhibit at the Lux Art Institute offers more than just static paintings: At this Encinitas, California, gallery, the artist too is on display. Located 25 miles north of San Diego and nestled in a wildlife preserve above San Elijo Lagoon, the Lux Art Institute, the state’s first LEED-certified museum, makes artists’ creative processes apparent to the public. Institute director Reesey Shaw says the goal of the program, conceived in 1998, is to make visual arts a visible process. An artist is invited to live and work at the museum, where visitors can drop by to watch him or her paint or sculpt. Previous work is exhibited near the workspace, and the piece the artist is working on eventually takes its place at the museum. The Artist Pavilion studio was occupied first by Chilean sculptor Tomás Rivas, who moved in at the end of October. Astrid Preston (left), Hemispheres’ December 2002 cover artist, and Julie Heffernan have been residents as well; watch Preston work in May. Daniel Wheeler will take up residence June 4–22. Open Thursday and Friday 1 p.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tel: 760-436-6611 or luxartinstitute.org —Melissa Stage
