UpDates: Weekend Breakaway
Beyond San Juan
Look down from one of the U.S.’ most amazing national forests.
The only tropical rain forest in the U.S. national forest system is a perfect pre- or postcruise destination in Puerto Rico. El Yunque rises far above glitzy beaches to verdant mountains. Rain or shine, you’ll be immersed in cooler temperatures, serenaded by the singsong of the indigenous tree frogs called coquis, and stunned by breathtaking views of surrounding seas. From San Juan, head east for 45 minutes on the new toll road Route 66, then south on PR191 into the forest to the El Portal Visitors’ Center. The road showcases spectacular waterfalls, observation towers, and picnic areas. Though
this U.S. national forest is the smallest, it’s also the most biodiverse (www.fs.fed.us/r8/caribbean/index.shtml). Explore along 25 miles of trails that offer awesome views of summits or the ebb and flow of mists. After being closed for decades by landslides, the southern side of the forest reopens this spring with a new recreation area and trails. To engage a guide, contact Myrna Tirado at least three weeks ahead (mtirado@fs.fed.us; $3–$4). Want to stay awhile?
